February 16 to 23, 1947 -

Chief Internal Events Reported.

(a)

"Wah Kiu Yat Po" of Feb. 17 reports that the body of a young man was found outside the Protected Area at Kai Tal: Airfield. He was found to have died of a gunshot wound. A British soldier is being questioned.

(Note: No developments have been reported.)

(b)

Kung Sheung Daily Press" says that the price of rice is rising rapidly. Government rice at 20 cents has risen to 30 cents per catty. Black Market rice on which 40 percent. of the Colony's rice eaters depend, having no ration cards, fluctuates from 70 cents to $2 per catty.

The same paper also reports that of 3,000 destitutes who voluntarily registered for repatriation, 2,600 have been returned to their own country.

(a) "Kwor Yin Daily Press" of Feb. 18 reports that Mrs. Wong, mother of Wong Shui-cheung (the peanut hawker case) complains that she has not yet received the $10,000 compensation awarded by the Hong Kong Government.

(e) "Sing Tao Jih Pao" of Feb. 21 reports that a villager belonging to Chau Tau, New Territories, was wounded by a bullet, apparently fired by British troops exercising in the next valley. (Note: No local reaction.)

(f)

The Canton newspaper "Shang Pao" of Feb. 16 reports that arising out of smuggling activities near Ping Shan, New Territories, two Chinese subjects, said to be members of the Peace Preservation Corps, are held by the Hong Kong Police at Ping Shan.
